The purpose of this section is to share with the novice the ins and outs of constructing a Koi pond. This will be our first attempt to build something other than a small water feature I built a couple of years ago. We will share our mistakes with you as we journey through. My wife and I will preform the majority of the work; occasionally, I will try to have our children help; however, I do not think I will hold my breath (teenagers).

Our first mistake, I bought the horse before the barn.
At the moment, we have 49 Koi in this container. Too many fish for the container; therefore, I find myself performing an 80% water change every week.

Today I am going to start removing the two eucalyptus trees.
I am thinking of placing the pond in this area. The rough dimensions will be 12'x 30'x 6’?

The blue area indicates the shape of the pond and the red shaded area is where I think I will build the waterfall.

Another view of the area.

A tree service quoted me $650.00 to remove both eucalyptus trees. The one on the left is about 50 - 60 feet and the one on the right is about 40 - 45 feet. Heck, I decided to go to home depot and purchase a second chain saw with a pole extension for $99.00. Therefore, I saved myself about $550.00.

Here I am getting ready to anchor sections of the branches with a rope in order to guide them away from the house once the branches start coming down.
Using a chain saw to cut the branches and trunk into manageable sections in order to place them into the weekly sanitation collection will save me additional funds.

Recap of the day... The smaller tree was removed with only one small problem. It appears that the roots of the tree shifted as the truck was being removed; therefore, the irrigation pipes that were beneath the root system broke and my pond began to fill with water prematurely. What a headache, it set me back several hours. Our first unforeseen obstacle and many more expected.
