Just returned from the Sacramento Koi's seminar on pond design. My wife and I had a great time and acquired much need knowledge for our project. The folks at Sacramento Koi are credible and extremely well informed on their products and services. I was allowed to video tape the seminar for my reference material. Steve Walker is the founder/owner of the company and is a wealth of information when it comes to this industry. We not only found him to be keen on his filters and pond related hardware, but also well versed on high quality koi. I was very impressed with my wife’s retention of how to identify koi; thanks to Steve’s simple to understand explanation on how to classify and identify koi. He put it in terms and utilized illustrations that were easy to follow and understand.
His website has just made pond design plans available to his viewers on the following size ponds (1,500, 3,000, 6,000, 10,000 and 15,000 gallons) Moreover, the plans are FREE for downloading
After the seminar, my wife and I visited his home in the evening in order to view his night lit pond. Boy, it is a completely different world, viewing koi with underwater lighting. The koi’s colors were brilliant. Yes, I too will be incorporating pond lights into my design.

This oak tree literally covers Steve’s entire pond. This was proof to me that his system is well equipped to handle messy trees.

This video clip shows how stunning the koi are depicted with the underwater lights. The koi shown here measure about 25" - 30" in length. Click on the play button to view the clip.

Recap of the day...After the pond viewing, the discussion of possibly producing a DVD on pond construction came to the forefront. It was then that my wife and I told Steve that I could help him produce such a DVD. Therefore, a DVD in the not to distant future may be available through his company at a feasible price.

I am currently extremely busy trying to raise 12 English Bulldog puppies ;therefore, I have put this project on hold until the puppies have gone to their new homes.
During my breaks from feeding puppies, I desided to sculpt a scaled model of the proposed project.

I am back...
Finally, no more puppy duty. The puppies will be picked up in four days. Now I can concentrate on the pond.
Between puppy cleaning and feedings, I spent time redesigning the project. Moreover, I had a chance to visit with subcontractors and designers. One of the subcontractors is Jason that specializes in rock-scapes. I was very impressed with his previous work and as of now, I plan to utilize him in this project. More on Jason in the future.
Here is a bird's eye view of the proposed plans that I have sent to Steve Walker (sacramentokoi.com) for his review and recommendations. (the plans below show the new updated plans as of August 28, 2006).

The plans are not to scale; they are only a reference as to the equipment, features and pipe sizes. For a PDF file that show the same image below, visit PDF pond design bird's eye. Sacramentokoi.com's 15,000 gallon modified plans for this project can also be viewed in a PDF file. |

On another note: I have uploaded videos I took while attending SacramentoKoi.com's seminar. Steve Walker has granted me permission to use the footage I took of his koi pond seminar. The initial purpose of video taping the seminar was for my personal library; however, over the weekend I wrote to Steve for permission to post additional segments. I am happy to report that he has granted me permission to post anything I desire.
For those of you that have edited video before, you know how labor challenging this task can be. Please be patient and I will upload segments whenever I can squeeze some free time. I guarantee you, it will be worth the wait, Steve is a wealth of information when it comes to koi ponds. All videos will be located in the video section of this website. Throughout this pond construction journal I may not remember to refer the viewers to the new video postings; therefore, I recommend you periodically visit the video section for new topics. For those that are wondering why the videos are broken up into smaller section, well the reasons are as follows.
- the third party site only allows files smaller than 100MB and with a duration of 10 minutes or less.
- smaller files allow you to view the video faster and does not waste your time while the file is being streamed.
